Can ChatGPT help tradespeople?

What it’s good at

ChatGPT is a quick, patient writer and explainer. For a tradesperson, that’s handy for:

• A text you’d rather not write: running late, a price going up, turning a job down.
• A clear description of the work for a quote, from your rough notes.
• A voice note turned into a tidy list.
• A letter, a contract or a supplier’s terms explained in plain English.
• Thinking a decision through: whether to take a job on, what to ask a supplier.

Where to be careful

OpenAI’s own help centre says ChatGPT can give incorrect or misleading answers, sometimes sounding confident when it’s wrong, and asks you to check important information against reliable sources. So check anything that matters, such as a regulation, a price or anything to do with safety, against the source, and read every message before it goes to a customer.

Think, too, about what you paste in. A customer’s address and phone number are theirs.

What it can’t do on its own

ChatGPT starts from the conversation. With Memory on, it can remember preferences and details from your chats. Connect other apps, such as your email, and it can work with what’s in them, and some apps let it take actions there. It can also run tasks on a schedule.

What it isn’t is the place your business is kept. Your quotes, invoices, diary and customers live somewhere else, so “Who owes me money?” only gets an answer if they’re somewhere it can see, and nothing is chased on day 3 unless you’ve set that up and keep it running.
